Copper Beech with Early Morning Light

100 x 200 cm | Yuumashi Kozo
Painted on Hampstead Heath, London in summer 2020. This huge Copper Beech tree has boughs that gracefully sweep down to the grass creating a canopy. The tree has been host to a pre-school during the Covid crisis and while I painted I was aware of the happiness of very young children and their inspiring teachers. We all benefitted from the protective and nurturing atmosphere that the tree created. To recreate the magical feeling of first light I sprayed thistle blue paint over the calligraphed dark purple-brown leaves. This version of the Copper Beech is on a large piece of handmade Yuumashi paper 1m x 2m. The piece can be rolled, boxed and posted anywhere. I have attached a simple wooden batten with book binders paste and a transparent nylon thread for instant hanging. The paper could also be framed, mounted or pasted directly onto a flat surface by specialist wall paperers - in the manner of Fusuma or Japanese sliding door panels. An individual touch for your interior...
